Lusca Salt

Solar salt at industrial scale

Lusca Salt™ runs the solar salt works at Matthew Town, Great Inagua, and its own deep-water export dock at Man of War Bay. Seawater, sun and wind do most of the work. Our team harvests, washes and ships the salt to customers worldwide.

How our salt is made

Heritage

Salt on Great Inagua since the 1840s

  1. 1849

Matthew Town is founded, named after Governor George Mathew, and salt becomes the island’s industry.

  2. 1936

The Erickson brothers from Massachusetts start work at Matthew Town and begin to mechanise the harvest.

  3. 1954

Morton Salt acquires the works and builds the largest solar salt operation in The Bahamas.

  4. 2026

The works becomes Lusca Salt, a Liwathon Group company.

How our salt is made

From seawater to shipment

Sun and wind provide the energy for evaporation. There is no mining and no heavy refining: just controlled solar evaporation, careful washing and quality checks at every stage.

  1. Seawater rushes from the intake pump station into the supply canal.

    Seawater intake

We pump seawater into shallow ponds: 175,000 US gallons every minute.

  2. The edge of a pink brine pond under large white clouds.

    Solar evaporation

Sun and wind concentrate the brine as it moves through around 80 ponds.

  3. Aerial view of pink evaporation ponds and white crystalliser beds on Great Inagua.

    Crystallisation

When the brine is saturated, salt crystallises in 61 crystalliser beds.

  4. A harvester conveyor loads freshly harvested salt into a haul truck.

    Harvest and wash

Harvesters lift the salt around the clock. It is then washed, screened and graded.

  5. The conveyor trestle and loading head of the Lusca Salt export dock at Man of War Bay, seen from the water.

    Stockpile and ship

Salt is stockpiled, then loaded directly from the works onto ocean-going bulk carriers at our deep-water dock.
